Which journey fits your beach day?

Playa Blanca is a beach on Barú, rather than a separate island you must reach by boat. The main choice is how much of the day you want arranged, and whether you want the short boat transfer to the Playa Tranquila sector.

  • Playa Blanca day trip: round-trip bus transport and lunch. Choose this road-based trip if you want to avoid the short boat transfer; chairs and shade are rented separately.
  • Playa Tranquila day trip: bus to Barú, then a boat ride of about five minutes. Lunch, a chair and a shaded canopy are included.
  • Taxi, private transfer or your own car: organise the journey and return yourself, then choose and pay for food and beach services separately.

Pickup and travel time from Cartagena

For the Playa Blanca day trip, pickup is usually between 7 and 8 a.m. at your hotel or an agreed point in Cartagena’s hotel area. The road journey to Barú takes approximately one hour, depending on traffic and the departure point; collecting the group and reaching your beach sector take additional time.

Playa Tranquila lists a 7:30 a.m. departure from Cartagena. Your pickup time and location depend on where you are staying and are confirmed by WhatsApp. Send your accommodation’s name and location before the trip: pickup at the door of every hotel or apartment is not guaranteed.

If you need help boarding a bus or small boat, describe that need before booking so the team can confirm the arrangements for your chosen trip. If you need an English-speaking guide, ask about availability before paying; an English booking page does not confirm the language spoken on the tour.

Going independently by taxi, car or public transport

For a taxi or private transfer, give Playa Blanca as the destination and agree on the full journey: the outbound drop-off, return pickup point, pickup time and final stop in Cartagena. Ask for the total price and keep the driver’s contact details. If you drive, check parking arrangements and the remaining route to your chosen beach sector.

If you use public transport, confirm where each service ends before boarding. A bus to Pasacaballos does not automatically take you all the way to Playa Blanca. Establish the onward connection, each fare and your return route before setting out.

A boat transfer from Cartagena is a different journey from Playa Tranquila’s short boat ride after arriving in Barú by road. If you choose a sea transfer, check its departure pier, beach landing, return arrangement and included charges with that service.

Playa Blanca or Playa Tranquila: what is waiting at the beach?

The Playa Blanca day trip includes lunch, but chairs and shade cost extra. Playa Tranquila includes lunch, a chair and a shaded canopy during the beach day. That difference matters if you want somewhere to sit in the shade without arranging a rental on arrival.

Drinks and additional purchases are separate. The three trips below also have mandatory insurance payable on arrival; the price comparison shows that charge alongside the tour price. Before accepting a rental or extra service, agree on its total price, duration and how many people it covers.

Playa Tranquila is a sector of Barú with visitor services, not a promise of an empty beach. Other visitors, vendors and boats may be present, and the sea conditions change. Choose it for the included services and the route, rather than a guarantee of silence or calm water.

Choose your return before you book

The Playa Blanca day trip finishes at around 3 p.m., when the return journey to Cartagena begins. That is not your hotel arrival time. Standard Playa Tranquila also returns in the afternoon; confirm the estimated arrival and drop-off point if you have another activity, a flight or a cruise departure to meet.

To stay after dark, select Playa Tranquila with bioluminescent plankton. It includes the beach day, chair, shade, lunch and short boat transfer, followed by the plankton outing, a snack and the return bus journey at night. Confirm the expected return time and drop-off point when booking.

The daytime Playa Blanca trip does not include this evening extension. Book the plan with plankton from the start so your return is arranged for it, and keep the evening available. The glow is a natural phenomenon and its visibility is not guaranteed.
